Using RSS Feeds in Hub Pages
83Scope
The purpose of this hub page is to give hub page creators the necessary information to set-up basic RSS Feeds to their hub pages.
Syndicator
What is an RSS Feed?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication or Subscription. There are many definitions for the word Syndication, but the one that applies here is: "An agency that sells articles, features, or photographs for publication in a number of newspapers or periodicals simultaneously." The dictionary definition that applies to subscription is: "An agreement to receive or be given access to electronic texts or services, especially over the Internet."
RSS Icon
The sites or web pages that do offer RSS Feeds have a symbol either at the top of the page or at the bottom of the page that looks like this. If you click on the symbol, it will bring you to a RSS Feed Page that lists categories of different types of information where you can select the category of information you would like to subscribe to.
What is the Difference Between Syndication and Subscriber?
There are two parts to RSS, one is the syndication and the other is the subscriber. The syndicator is the website or facility that is providing the feed items. At this time it is beyond the scope of this hub article to talk about creating a syndication. The subscriber is the one who is subscribing to the syndication and receives the feed from the syndicator. The information is automatically updated to the subscriber's hub page when the syndicator changes the information. It is much like having a subscription to a newspaper and receiving newspapers daily with changed information.
Internal and External RSS Feeds
For purposes of explanation, RSS feeds for hub pages can be divided into two categories: Internal and external. Internal RSS feeds are from one hubber to another. External are from an external source, such as a web site to one of your hub pages. The RSS feed contains a list of topics. The hub page has a reader (RSS capsule) that is capable of reading the list of topics. When the reader receives and displays the list of topics, each topic will have the time the topic was created
The following two tutorials show how to subscribe to both an internal RSS Feed and an external RSS Feed. The example that I used for the internal RSS feed is to subscribe to a hub that "feeds" recipes to my hub on reading nutritional labels.
How to Create an Internal RSS Subscription
The example that I used for the external RSS feed is to subscribe to the California Department of Fish and Game website to a hub that I created on Duck Hunting in California. This subscription feeds fish and game information to my hub.

What are the Advantages of Having RSS Feeds?
They can enhance your hub page by feeding the latest supplementary information to your hub page topic. But be careful to get a feed that is very close to your hub page topic but not to the point where you may be in violation of the Hub Page duplication policy. The other advantage is that by linking to RSS feeds, you increase your ranking in google search engine operation which makes it easier for viewers to find your work.

Thanks for explaining RSS feed so well.Maybe now I will start using RSS finally.Good Hub
Thankyou so much for explaining about RSS, because I've been writing online for some time but did not know how it worked. This Hub is really informative and I appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge about it. Best wishes!
Yes I used to use the RSS News Feeds on my hubs. But since Panda in Feb 2011 we were advised not to use them and then the capsule was removed.
The reason given was they were not always the same subject as the article and we were therefore being penalized by Google.
I stopped using the RSS feeds for my own related hubs too because of this reason but now that I have read your hub I am going to put back some RSS feeds that are directly linked to the subject I have written about on my hubs.
Thanks for SHARING. Up and Useful
I found this hub very useful and am off to include RSS feeds for my hubs with caution ofcourse. Voted up.
I never knew what the "RSS" in RSS feed meant. I just knew that you had to be careful on this site how you used it. You must use it properly or be labelled overly promotional. The only time I have used it is linking a hub trail hub of mine with that of other hubbers. Thanks for describing the acronym. I am bookmarking this in case I want to use an RSS feed on another one of my hubs.
Very helpful information! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! Voted up and useful.
I used RSS feeds during the time Hubpages had the hubmob thing going on. After that with all the comments about duplication, I didn't bother to use it anymore. Gosh, thanks so much for explaining all of this. Very helpful.
